When you book with a Protected Trust Services (PTS) member, we provide excellent levels of consumer protection.
- Package Travel Regulations Compliance from all our members
- The Trust Account Solution
- Supplier Failure Insurance (SFI)
- ATOL
All these things mean that you are as thoroughly protected as possible. However, there are some things that are only covered by travel insurance. Our members could be able to help you point you in the right direction when choosing the right travel insurance for your holiday, but this is a decision ultimately in consumer hands.
The kind of things to keep in mind that travel insurance will protect you against are as follows:
- Lost or Stolen Items – unless you expressed carelessness, such as leaving a bag unattended before it was stolen, travel insurance will cover lost or stolen luggage.
- Medical Costs – This spans from costs for medication to emergency medical treatment, to the costs of accommodation for a carer. However, if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, then you must ensure your insurer is aware of them.
- Cancellation Costs – If you have an accident or have been called in for jury service, these are a couple of the things that could be covered by travel insurance. However, if you have just changed your mind about your holiday, this won’t be covered.
When it comes to travel insurance, it’s important to think about what to prioritise. We always urge consumers not to go cheap on travel insurance, because it’s so important, but there are some things you may want to save money on, and others you may want to pay a little extra for.
The things we’ve listed above are all things that will generally be covered by travel insurance in some capacity, you can find out more detail on those things on our blog. However, there are some additional things you may want to keep in mind when looking for the right insurance for you.
- Extreme Sports – For things such as skiing, sky-diving, or bungee jumping, you can extend your insurance to cover this. So, if you’re thinking of doing any of those on holiday, it’s worth that little bit extra, these things won’t be covered normally.
- Individual Valuables – if you’re taking anything on holiday with you that is particularly valuable, it’s worth looking into insuring that item specifically.
- Extra Costs for Priority – if something is a particularly high priority to you, such as covering a larger amount of luggage because you plan to bring stuff home, or extending medical cover, then it’s important to look into this too.
No matter how much protection you have otherwise, there are some things that just cannot be controlled or predicted, and this is why it’s so important to have travel insurance and to get it as soon as you book.
Some of the things you could be preparing for are:
- Weather Conditions
- Political Unrest in Another Country
- Accidents
- Pandemic
- Home Emergencies and more
These are all things that you can be covered for in some way, but for complete security around cancellations or medical costs of this kind, travel insurance is important.
