Many travel professionals choose to join the travel industry as a full time homeworker because they don’t feel equipped to take on a whole business alone from the get go.

That makes complete sense. If you’ve only worked as an employee in the travel industry, or this truly is your first step into the industry, then throwing yourself in the deep end could be overwhelming. Homeworking often gives someone the ability to do the fun parts without taking on all the stressful parts all at once. This depends a little bit on what kind of homeworker support you have, but it is generally considered a good way to start.

Beyond that though, some forget that there’s even more progression beyond that. If you really want to take your time getting familiar, you don’t have to start out as a full time homeworker. There are, of course, pros and cons to becoming either a part time or full time homeworker, but if starting out part time is the only way you can get started, it is an option that many in the industry are happy with.

The key to deciding here is to lay out your options, what they mean for you specifically, and then determine which has more benefits than fallbacks for you and your business.

So, let’s check out your options.

Should You Be a Full Time Homeworker?

Going full time for most means that this is your sole focus. If you’re looking to completely commit to a plan, or even if you want to work with a specific support option and you have to be full time to do so, then you might be leaning towards being a full time homeworker.

But the easiest way to figure this out is to simply lay out the ups and downs of this option, so that’s exactly what we’re going to help you do here:

Pros

  1. You can fully commit to your business without other distractions,
  2. You’re going to get results faster and get a picture of if this is viable longterm sooner,
  3. You’ll have a fully flexible schedule, so you can fit your business around your life,
  4. You’ll have time and space to grow, experiment, and find what works for you, and
  5. Of course, you’ll earn more from being a full time homeworker.

Cons

  1. If you don’t have a lot of experience, starting out will be hard work,
  2. You are fully committing all your time to something completely new,
  3. You will have less security without a back-up plan, and
  4. Once you commit to full time, it may be more difficult to dial back if it’s too much.

Some of these cons may not feel like they apply to you at all. Some of the cons may feel relatively small for you in comparison to the benefits. Regardless, how these pros and cons weigh up for you is entirely dependent on what you feel will work the best for you. The important part here is that you are aware of the pros and cons and can make an informed decision about whether you want to be a full time homeworker.

Should You Be a Part Time Homeworker?

Keeping the pros and cons of full time in mind, let’s now explore how working part time could differ. This will obvious alleviate some of the cons of working full time, but it does have a few cons of its own. Let’s go over them.

Pros

  1. Start out at a more managable pace,
  2. Keep the security of your current job in case there are bumps,
  3. Make an extra source of income,
  4. You can increase your hours and build up to going full time when you’re ready, and
  5. If you love your current job, you don’t have to give up either opportunity.

Cons

  1. You will be splitting your time between 2 jobs,
  2. You’ll probably spend more time working overall than if you go full time,
  3. Potential added stress, and
  4. There’s only so much growth you’ll be able to achieve with limited hours.

Growing your business past a certain point takes time, so it’s especially important to keep this in mind if you are thinking about working part time as a homeworker. A lot of homeworkers that started out part time either intended to go full time eventually, or ended up going full time even if they didn’t originally plan to.

Going part time gives you the time and space to take things at your pace and explore this industry that you love with far less pressure. In saying that, for some of you starting part time might just be far too slow for you, the choice is completely in your hands.

If taking cautious first steps will be more stressful for you than diving in head-first, then part-time will be counter-productive. But, those same cautious steps could provide the exact security that a different homeworker needs to have the confidence to start the journey at all.  Any decision you make will have its advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to make sure that think it through thoroughly before you begin.

But wherever in your journey you are, travel is a friendly and flexible industry, so don’t be afraid to take part and share your love of the world, however works best for you.
