Following the deadline set for major UK airports to install new 3D scanning technology, several airports have announced actions to be taken that will allow the removal of the 100ml rule against liquids carried by passengers that is currently in place.

The deadline set for UK airports by the government was announced only a few months prior in 2022 and UK airports were set a deadline of Jun 2024 to get the new technology installed. This technology will allow passengers to board their flights without the 100ml rule restricting the amount of liquids they can carry, a measure that was previously put in place to prevent terror. This new technology, however, will allow for better security which means this measure will no longer be required (other security measures may still apply in destination airports, to check the requirements in your destination, don’t forget to check out the Foreign Travel Advice page for updates).

The first major UK airport to announce action was London City Airport, which is now set to be the first of the UK’s airports to remove the 100ml rule. London Airport has claimed that the rule will be dropped by the end of March 2023, in time for the easter holidays and half-term to come this year.

Following close on its heels, Luton Airport also announced last week that they have a plan for action to be taken. According to the reports, Luton Airport will be installing 12 advanced scanners before the start of 2024 and ahead of the government’s set deadline.

Bosses at London Airport stated that 2 new security scanners would be put in place over the next few weeks of March, allowing all passengers to take up to 2 litres of liquids through security in hand luggage with them. This new measure will also mean passengers can take their laptops in their bags with them once the scanners are in place.

Robert Sinclair, the Chief Executive of London Airport, said, “The good news for anyone planning a holiday or a business trip is that we will be the first mainstream UK airport to offer a fully CT security experience from the end of this month. The new lanes will not only cut hassle, but also cut queuing times, which I know passengers will love.”
