Sri Lanka has announced this week that their new online arrival card system and electronic immigration forms have been officially introduced for all international travellers, including those from the UK.

This is a great step for a destination to take, one that could lead to many following in their footsteps as this puts the entire entry and visa process for travellers to Sri Lanka online. Though UK travellers can still apply in other ways, having the entire process online sparks hope for a more efficient and simple process for both the travellers and the destination.

In order to enter Sri Lanka, international travellers will still be required to apply for $50 Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online, though they can apply for a visa on arrival if they wish. The FCDO have advised consumers to apply online rather than on arrival. A tourist visa to Sri Lanka is currently valid for a full 30 days before further steps need to be taken.

As across the Schengen area, all UK passports need to be valid for a further 6 months from the date that the traveller arrives in Sri Lanka. This and all entry rules for the destination can be found up to date on the Foreign Travel Advice website, where the FCDO have now updated their advice for travel to Sri Lanka.

The Foreign Office said, “The Department of Immigration and Emigration has introduced an online arrival card system which foreign nationals can complete three days prior to arrival in Sri Lanka. All visitors need to comply with the guidelines imposed for tourists by the Government of Sri Lanka.”

“Further information on eligibility is available on the Department of Immigration and Emigration website. Visitors can apply for an ETA on the ETA website. On-arrival visa facilities are available, however, applying for an ETA before travel is advised for ease of travel and to prevent delays on arrival.”
