UK travellers looking to visit Lisbon, Portugal at the start of next month (August) have been warned this week by the FCDO that there may be some disruptions to their travel plans.

As part of World Youth Day, the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon, is expecting to host Pope Francis from the 1st to the 6th of August. As a result, the city authorities are expecting a lot of activity during the course of his visit. The FCDO have released a small warning on the Foreign Travel Advice page for any travellers looking to be in Lisbon on those days.

Though flights are not expected to see an effect, travellers have been advised that forms of public transport in Lisbon are expected to be crowded and in more frequent use than usual. This advice extends to other facilities and services in the city.

“During this period, you should expect an increase in the number of people using public transport and other facilities in the Lisbon area,” the Foreign Office said.

“Be prepared for road closures and restrictions on accessing the city by car on days when major events are taking place. There will be enhanced security checks at land borders from 22 July to 7 August.

“If you are travelling to Portugal by road during this period, you should familiarise yourself with the authorised border crossing points and allow more time to enter/exit Portugal.”
